“Thirsty for God”
Much too often our relationship with God is experienced as duty or obligation with little to no joy. What a contrast to “fans” of college or professional teams who enthusiastically and joyfully cheer their teams on gladly wearing their team’s and player’s jerseys.
I. Thirsty in the Wilderness –
A. David has been forced out of Jerusalem as king by his son Absalom –
1. Such a sad consequence resulted from David’s sin of adultery and murder –
2. Yet sin did not keep David from longing for God nor rob him of his confidence that God would reveal His presence in His mercy – , , ,
B. The wilderness is a good place to know the presence of our God
1. Desire is the heart of worship –
2. One thing I have desired . . . – ;
3. Jeremiah marveled at God’s people forsaking Him –
4. Jesus promised satisfaction for those who came to Him –
II. Satisfaction With God’s Presence –
A. God’s lovingkindness is better than life –
1. We too often focus our attention upon this life –
2. We invest in what does not satisfy us –
3. Our God is jealous for you –
Our misery flows from our failure to hunger and thirst for God.
B. Faith is active
1. Not passive – seek the Lord – – God is really there
2. Remember at night – – Daytime often clouds our desires but night time helps us to focus on the Lord
3. My soul follows You closely –
III. Victory Over Enemies –
A. Those who seek the destruction of believers themselves are destroyed
1. Every curse they utter returns upon themselves
2. Every blow upon the godly is a nail in their own coffin
B. Triumph yet grief for enemies
1. Absalom was slain –
2. Yet David’s grief was profound –
Praise God we have a Father who gave His own Son who died in our place so that we might know the joy of living in our Father’s presence. Our joy in the Lord will alone overcome grief even in our families. May we each thirst f
